Background. Andrew Huxley came from an illustrious family. His paternal grandfather was Thomas Henry Huxley FRS (usually known as ‘TH’) (1825–1895), the self-styled ‘Darwin's bulldog’, who was elected to the Royal Society in 1851 at the age of 26 and later became President of the Royal Society in 1883.
