1950s - 1970s. After World War II, San Francisco State College moved from its overflowing downtown campus to its present site. This set the stage for a major expansion of both the college and the department of history. By mid-decade, the history curriculum listed some thirty courses. Its founding members set a high standard.
A college established in the final year of the 19th century, San Francisco State College found itself confronted by the idealism of the youth of the 1960s and anger over academic bureaucratic policies. From November 1968 to March 1969, the words “On strike! Shut it down!” rang out daily from the campus of San Francisco State College.

The student body is diverse, reflecting not only the San Francisco area, but also the large number of international students who choose San Francisco State University’s Lam Family College of Business. In 2004, the College awarded more undergraduate business degrees to Asian Americans than any other institution in the United States.
