While in Russia, Alexander met one of Marie’s ladies-in-waiting, Countess Julia von Hauke. Julia was the orphaned Polish daughter of the former minister to the Tsar, Count Johann Morutz von Hauke, and was the Tsar’s ward.
Julie (or Julia) Therese Salomea Hauke [1] was born in Warsaw (Congress Poland), then ruled in personal union by the Tsar of Imperial Russia. She was the daughter of John Maurice Hauke, a German soldier, and his wife Sophie (née Lafontaine). Julie was rumored to be of Jewish descent. [2]

On 28 October 1851, Hauke's youngest daughter, Countess Julia von Hauke, then lady-in-waiting to Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna, married Prince Alexander of Hesse and by Rhine, Maria's brother. Julia became an ancestress of the Mountbatten family, the British royal family, and the Spanish royal family.
