Merton’s History and English graduates have gone on to careers in Art History and International Relations as well as in English and History. History and Modern Languages: With tutors in French and Spanish and college lecturers in other languages, we admit students to study History and French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Merton College. Merton College was founded in 1264 by Walter de Merton, Bishop of Rochester, for twenty graduate fellows. Undergraduates were formally admitted in the early 1380s, when John Wyliot, a former fellow and sub-warden, endowed a number of scholarships, known at Merton as postmasterships.
