Boris Vasilevich Shchukin was born in Moscow. He served in the Imperial Army during World War I and saw Civil War action with the Red Army. In 1921 he joined the Vakhtangov Theatre and was a favorite pupil of its director, Yevgeny Vakhtangov. After the latter's death in 1922 Shchukin stayed on as one of the company's leading stars and directors.
