Thomas Edward Lawrence (1888-1935) was born in Wales and educated at Jesus and Magdalen Colleges, Oxford. He was commissioned on the outbreak of the First World War and in 1917 was officially attached to the staff of the Hejaz expeditionary force, under General Wingate.

Born in north Wales of Anglo-Irish stock, educated at Oxford High School and Jesus College, Oxford, Lawrence's interest in medieval military architecture led to a travelling fellowship to excavate in the Middle East, enabling familiarization with its language and people.
Edited by G. B. Shaw and Mrs Shaw, it was published privately in 1926 (trade edition, 1935). There has been much discussion of Lawrence’s complicated, unusual personality, and of his years, from 1922 onwards, as an aircraftsman (under the assumed name of J. H. Ross) and as a private soldier (having changed his name, by deed poll, to T. E. Shaw).

Object description. The Short Lee Enfield Rifle used by T E Lawrence during the Arab Revolt. The initials TEL and the date 4.12.16 are carved near the magazine, together with 5 notches, the largest of which was made when a Turkish officer was shot by Lawrence.
