Particular focus is placed on his role as ambassador to the court of Louis XIV of France during the reign of Charles II, on his activities related to the Treaty of Dover (1670), on his motives in the impeachment of Danby, and on his contribution to the formation of the Whig Party.

MONTAGU, RALPH, 1st Duke of (c. 1638—1709), English diplomatist, was the second son of Edward, 2nd Baron Montagu of Boughton (1616–1684), whose peerage was one of several granted in the 17th century to different members of the Montagu family (q.v.).
Short 3/4 length, facing 3/4 R, in heavy curled wig, white cravat, voluminous mantle grasped by LH at breast, RH on hip; slight b/ground of landscape to R, sculptured figure to L. Cut down without letters; much rubbed.
