He was the second son of Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Bolton and Catherine Parry. Educated at Winchester (1728–1729), he joined the Royal Navy, becoming a lieutenant aboard Shrewsbury on 4 March 1740.

[2] He was the eldest son of William Paulet, 1st Marquess of Winchester and Elizabeth Capel.
Born by 1488 William Paulet was the eldest son of Sir John Paulet of Basing, Hampshire. He trained as a lawyer but spent little time at court, instead he rose to prominence as a bureaucrat. He was close to Thomas Cromwell, and was involved with reducing Catherine of Aragon’s household and persuading Princess Mary to renounce her title.
