Situated in the pretty Lake District village of Hawkshead, the Grammar School Museum tells the story of school life since its founding in 1585. Our most famous pupil was William Wordsworth and in its heyday this was considered one of the best schools in the north of England. Wordsworth attended the school from age 9 to age 17.

The museum is operated by the Hawkshead Grammar School Foundation, whose main purpose is to provide grants to young people to assist their further education, vocational training, or entry into work. Educational grants are offered by the Foundation for young people residing in the Ancient Parish of Hawkshead, which includes Skelwith and Satterthwaite but not Colton.
In centuries past, promising young gentlemen were sent to Hawkshead Grammar School for their educational foundation. Among the former pupils was a certain William Wordsworth, who attended the school from 1779 to 1787 – you can still see a desk where the naughty young poet carved his name.
Old Grammar School Hawkshead 1900s The grammar school was founded by Archbishop Sandys; has an endowed income of £210, and a good library; and numbers, among its pupils, Dr. Walker, Dr. Wordsworth, the poet Wordsworth, Lord Abinger, Sir Frederick Pollock, and Dr. King.
