In the election of 1874 Disraeli and the Conservative regained power, and Disraeli served as prime minister until 1880, when Gladstone's party prevailed and Gladstone again became prime minister.
William Ewart Gladstone was born in Rodney Street, Liverpool on 29 December 1809, the fourth son of John Gladstone, who had moved south from Leith some years earlier. Gladstone senior was a successful merchant, trading in corn with the United States and cotton with Brazil and owning extensive plantations in the West Indies, which were operated by slaves, although he was not a slave trader himself.
