He was a catholic who married three times and fathered six daughters. He lived through the reigns of both Charles's and James and died in 1689. He looks very splendid in his portrait dated 1636.

Holding, the restorers of Castle Ashby. The public library was housed here with the museum, until 1883; the borough records are now preserved here.

Thomas Howard, 4th duke of Norfolk was an English nobleman executed for his intrigues against Queen Elizabeth I on behalf of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, a Roman Catholic claimant to the English throne. He was the son of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, who was put to death for alleged treasonable.
