The trust has an income of around £260 million each year, and employs around 3,700 staff. The hospital has a 24-hour major accident and emergency department and is the designated trauma unit for east Dorset, serving a population of around 500,000 people.

The walls are of local coursed rubble with dressings of Ham Hill stone; the roofs are covered with lead.
