In the 2nd century, Latin started changing and developing into what is known as “Vulgar Latin”. This is a form of Latin infused with aspects of other European languages, such as Celtic, Gaelic, Germanic, and other local languages.

The fall of the Western Roman Empire around AD 476 marked the end of Classical Latin as a widely spoken language but it continued to be used in religious, scientific, legal fields well into the Middle Ages.
