24 de abr. de 2021 · When Cromwell died suddenly in 1658 (perhaps of malaria or a urinary infection) his son Richard “King Dick” or “Tumbledown Dick” (or even “Queen Dick”) assumed the role of Lord Protector. While not a weak or incompetent ruler, he lacked the unique force and capacity required by the severity of the times.

Both Cromwell and his daughter received an elaborate ceremony (Cromwell’s funeral was based on that of King James I) and buried in a newly-created vault in Henry VII’s chapel at Westminster Abbey. Following Cromwell’s death his son Richard succeeded him to become Lord Protector.
