  1. Merton College, the first fully self-governing College in the University, was founded in 1264 by Walter de Merton, sometime Chancellor of England and later Bishop of Rochester. Mob Quadrangle, the oldest quadrangle in the University, was built in three phases: the Treasury c.1288-91; the north and east ranges and the Sacristy c.1304-11; and the Library on the south and west sides 1373-8.

  6. Timeline date. Fri, 02/28/1908 - 12:00. Lavish new Warden’s Lodgings are built on north side of Merton Street by Basil Champneys. The Warden's occupation of this oversized building would not last long and it is vacated in 1947. The now-named Old Warden's Lodgings are now occupied by the college library.

The Lodge is very much the gateway to the College and on a daily basis our team of Porters welcome and assist a significant number of Fellows, students, staff and visitors from all over the world. The role is a very busy and public facing one in which the Porters are required to provide the highest possible standards of service at all times.
