  1. 10 de nov. de 2021 · Origin of the Cullinan Diamond. The stone that became the Cullinan Diamond was discovered at Pretoria’s Premier Mine on January 26, 1905. A miner, Frederick Wells, discovered it when inspecting the mining paths 18 feet underground. A stone as large as the size of his fist was lodged into a wall of the mine and shone down at him.

  2. The mine had only been established in 1902 and the stone was found just 18 feet below the surrounding ground surface. Weighing in at 3,106 carats, it was and is the largest gem diamond ever found. Interestingly the shape suggests that it may have been only a fragment of an even larger stone, but that has never been found.

  3. The stone is pear-shaped with 74 facets. The diamond was actually part of the largest diamond crystal ever: the Cullinan diamond of 3,106.75. The two largest gems, Cullinan I and II, were formally presented to King Edward VII at Windsor Castle on 21 November 1909. They were temporarily mounted as a brooch for Queen Alexandra before being incorporated into the regalia after King Edward VII's death.
