Die Free Church of Scotland (1843–1900) entstand durch eine Abspaltung von der Church of Scotland im Jahre 1843, der sogenannten „Disruption“. Vorangegangen waren der Spaltung Auseinandersetzungen zwischen dem Mehrheitsflügel der Moderates und dem Minderheitsflügel der Evangelicals um Thomas Chalmers , deren Hauptstreitpunkt in der Haltung zur Frage der Patronatsrechte lag.

Directed by John Knox, the new Church of Scotland adopted a Presbyterian structure and largely Calvinist doctrine. The Reformation resulted in major changes in Scottish education, art and religious practice. The kirk itself became the subject of national pride, and many Scots saw their country as a new Israel.

While active membership in the church has declined significantly in recent decades, the government Scottish Household Survey found that 20% of the Scottish population, or over one million people, identified the Church of Scotland as their religious identity in 2019.
Church Hymnary, revised edition (1927) The second edition of the Hymnary, often abbreviated to RCH or CH2, coincided with the preparations for the union of the Church of Scotland with the United Free Church of Scotland (1929). RCH contains 727 hymns and was edited by Welsh composer David Evans.
