The site on which the School stands is of great historical interest as both the parkland and woodland are mentioned in the Domesday Book: “Robert of Romney also holds Benenden [Benendine] from the Bishop of Bayeux”. Benenden had become sufficiently permanent by 1086 to have both a name and a church. Benenden became a Charitable Foundation.

Benenden School is an independent day and boarding school for girls, founded in 1923 and situated in 250 acres of beautiful parkland in rural Kent. At present, there are 560 girls in the School. A considerable amount of new building has been completed in recent years, including an All-Weather Pitch, Staff Housing and a new School Hall and Music School.

Pupils from Benenden School have held a special Remembrance Sunday service in honour of a French pilot who died while saving the school buildings from a doodlebug 75 years ago. Dignitaries and relatives joined pupils and staff on Sunday (10 November) to pay tribute to the ultimate sacrifice made by Capitaine Jean Maridor (Free French).
