Richard Paul Long étudie à Berlin, pour ensuite étudier la sculpture à la Saint Martin's School of Arts jusqu'en 1965. Il travaille déjà à l'échelle du paysage.
Richard Long, por otro lado, trazó líneas en paisajes remotos, registrando sus caminatas en obras como «A Line Made by Walking» (1967). His very first land art work, A Line Made by Walking (1967), represents the beginning of Long’s use of the walk as medium. This straight line in a grass field is a sculpture created out of the artist’s constant and repetitive movement, where the compositional element consists solely of broken down grass juxtaposed with the unaffected areas either side of the walked on strip.
