Rear admiral (abbreviated as RADM), also sometimes referred to informally as "rear admiral (upper half)", is a two-star flag officer, with the pay grade of O-8 in the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard, the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps and the United States Maritime Service.
The rank of Admiral is temporary and generally used only in times of war. Fleet Admiral is the highest rank in the Navy and is used only during wartime. There have been no active holders of the rank since William F. Halsey, Jr. in 1945. Fleet Admiral is the 26th rank in the United States Navy, ranking above Admiral.
Rear Admiral Lower Half = O-7. Rear Admiral = O-8. Vice Admiral = O-9. Admiral (ADM) = O-10. The “O” in O-7, etc. is short for “Officer” in the same way that the enlisted pay grades E-1 and above use the “E” in “Enlisted” to designate those pay grades. Navy Warrant Officer pay grades have a similar abbreviation with “WO”.
