Photograph of a full length portrait of Sir Henry Keppel (1809-1904) standing, facing slightly towards the left. He looks ahead, away from the camera. He wears an Admirals uniform and holds a helmet in his right hand and a sword in his left. Keppel was Groom-in-Waiting from 1859 to 1860 and Principal Aide De Camp to Queen Victoria from 1878 to1879.
In 1848, Captain Henry Keppel discovered the sheltered, deep water harbour onboard the vessel, Meander. Repairs on the Meander were the first carried out in the harbour, known as New Harbour, where the Tanjong Pagar wharves would later be built. That name remained until 1900, when Keppel, then the Admiral, visited Singapore again.
In 1843, James Brooke, who had been Rajah of Sarawak for only one year, met Captain Henry Keppel, in command of HMS Dido, during a visit to Singapore. Between the two men arose a deep respect: Keppel was attracted by the Rajah personally and in sympathy with his objectives, one of which was the suppression of piracy in Sarawak waters.
By the sudden death of Mr Francis Henry Keppel on Thursday, at Charters Towers, another old timer is gone. He came to Charters Towers quite a lad about 1874 and was for a time associated with Tom Moody, on the Cape River. Afterwards he was employed at Maryvale by Mr William Hann. Mr Keppel married Miss Hann and settled at 'Niall" on Maryvale Creek.
