Kneller or Kniller, John Zacharias (1644–1702), painter, elder brother of Sir Godfrey Kneller, born at Lübeck on 6 Oct. 1644, accompanied his brother in all his travels on the continent in early life, and settled with him in England. Though he also practised as a portrait-painter, he never attained the same excellence.

21 de abr. de 2024 · Godfrey Kneller’s Early Years Gottfried Kniller was born in the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck (a German city-state) on 8 August 1646. His father Zacharias Kniller was a portraitist himself, and ensured that Gottfried and his elder brother, John, were educated well.
The broad brushwork is a hallmark of Kneller’s style. The sitter (1620-1726, presuming he is correctly identified as the Duke of St. Albans), was the illegitimate son of Charles II by the actress Nell Gwynn.
