John Tenniel expôs sua primeira pintura na Sociedade de Artistas Britânicos quando tinha apenas 16 anos. Aos 20 anos, perdeu a visão do seu olho direito em um acidente. Ele se aposentou quando seu outro olho começou a ter problemas, mas seguiu pintando aquarelas, inclusive quando ficou totalmente cego. John Tenniel.
Autodidacta, Tenniel llegó a ser brevemente estudiante de la Royal Academy, aunque lo dejó a causa de la rigidez y el agobiante número de horas que le exigían. Con 16 años empezó a exponer por su cuenta y la cosa no le fue mal. Pronto encontró trabajo para crear viñetas y caricaturas en los numerosos periódicos que existían en Londres.

Sir John Tenniel was an English illustrator and political cartoonist who lived from 1820 to 1914. He is mostly remembered for his illustrations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. Tenniel was one of 6 children born to a middle-class family.
John Tenniel ( Londen, 28 februari 1820 – aldaar, 25 februari 1914) werd geboren in Londen als zoon van een dans- en schermleraar van Franse ( hugenoten) komaf. Hij studeerde onder meer aan de Royal Academy of Arts in Londen, maar het vak van illustrator en politiek tekenaar heeft hij zich toch vooral zelf eigen gemaakt.
