Born in northern England, Thomas Sopwith (1803-1879) was a 'multi-tasking' workaholic, selftaught in geology, apprenticed young in the family cabinet-making business. Trained in the Newcastle coal fields and Durham lead-mining districts, with an 1824 survey of the Alston district lead mines, he early made his mark with his mining acumen.
