Shelton was born Patricia Jacqueline Sibley on 10 November 1923 in Dulwich, London. She began singing at age 12 on the radio show “Monday Night at Eight”. By age 15 she had a recording contract. Shelton performed at military bases in Britain during World War II. Her radio programme, Calling Malta, was broadcast from 1942 to 1947.
