He was barely spoken about in the family again. A few years ago, I travelled to Chicago to research what had happened to my great x4 uncle and Bertha, the woman who had been brave enough to run away with him.

Dickens's use of the passive form 'being shortened' gives no clue as to who or what was responsible for the shortening. It is possible, however, that the family-driven 'Boses-to-Boz/Boss change' can be attributed directly to the Gurney system of shorthand, which John Dickens already knew4 and Charles had started to learn in 1828 at around the age of sixteen, a year after Augustus was born.
