The coronation of Edward VII and his wife, Alexandra, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 9 August 1902. Originally scheduled for 26 June of that year, the ceremony had been postponed at very short notice, because the King had been taken ill with an abdominal abscess that required immediate surgery . Edward was born during the reign of his great-grandmother Queen Victoria as the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George V and Queen Mary. He was created Prince of Wales on his 16th birthday, seven weeks after his father succeeded as king.
Almost 200 years later the Trustees of this fund decided to establish a grammar school for the education of boys. King Edward VII School was opened in September 1908. It was followed by the building of Queen Mary School in 1930 to provide a similar education for girls. The Foundation's motto, ‘Sublimis ab unda', means "raised from the wave."
The School Archive. The AKS School Archive was established following the merger of Arnold and KEQMS. The archive collects and preserves all kinds of records relating to the history of Arnold, KEQMS, King Edward VII and Queen Mary schools making them available for research.
