Nicolson was born in Iran, where his father, Sir Arthur Nicolson (later 1st Baron Carnock of Carnock), was chargé d’affaires. Throughout his youth , his family moved about from diplomatic post to post, in central Europe, Turkey, Madrid, and Russia.
"ARTHUR NICOLSON CARNOCK, 1ST BARON (1849-), British diplomatist, was born in London Sept. 19 1849, the son of Admiral Sir Frederick William Erskine Hamilton Nicolson, 10th Bart. (18r5-99). He was educated at Rugby and Brasenose College, Oxford, and in 1870 entered the Foreign Office, where he was for some time assistant private secretary to Lord Granville.
