Despite his Roman Catholicism and the strong Protestantism of the Protectorate (1653–1659), Wright seems to have been able to find prestigious work.

There is no authenticated likeness in existence of Elizabeth Claypole, second daughter of Oliver Cromwell, who married, in 1646, John Claypole, although many portraits have acquired this identification.
