18 de jan. de 2024 · Classical Latin was the formal language used by educated Romans for writing and official proceedings, while Vulgar Latin was a more colloquial form spoken by common people. The fall of the Western Roman Empire around AD 476 marked the end of Classical Latin as a widely spoken language but it continued to be used in religious, scientific, legal fields well into the Middle Ages.

Laua is now extinct. The last native speaker of Tepecano, an indigenous language in Mexico, died in 1980. Tepecano is now extinct. However, this didn’t happen with Latin. Arguably, the last member of a community of native Latin speakers died in the 7th century – yet Latin clearly lived on.
Back when Latin was actually spoken by native speakers, it had dialects just like English has dialects. And just as Latin evolved into different languages after a millennium or so, we can reasonably suppose that British English and American English will have become two different languages in a thousand years.
