Born Cambridge, England, 3 May 1892. Died Cambridge, England, 10 September 1975. British experimental physicist Sir George Paget Thomson shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics with Clinton J. Davisson for the discovery of electron diffraction, which demonstrated that subatomic particles also have wave properties, as part of the wave–particle dualism of quantum mechanics.

Thomson var son till fysikern och nobelpristagaren J.J. Thomson, elektronens upptäckare, och Rose Elisabeth Paget, dotter till George Edward Paget. Han gick i The Perse School, Cambridge, innan han började läsa matematik och fysik vid Trinity College, Cambridge, fram till utbrottet av första världskriget 1914, då han gick in i drottningens Royal West Surrey Regiment.
Thomson was born in Cambridge in 1892, into a family of scientific distinction on both sides. His father, Sir Joseph Thomson (always known as 'J.J.'), was one of the foremost physicists of the day, Director of the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, and in 1906 awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for his discovery of the electron.
His mother was Rose Paget, daughter of Cambridge Regius Professor of Medicine Sir George Paget, and herself a physics student of J. J.’s at the Cavendish Laboratory. On his mother's side he had a strong medical tradition, but both from his mother and father he derived a passion for mathematics and physics.
