Se verdade ou não, foi através de “Bliss” que Katherine Mansfield se tornou reconhecida em muitos países e também no Brasil, com a primeira tradução para o português realizada por Érico Veríssimo, em 1937. Posteriormente, Julieta Cupertino e Ana Cristina Cesar também o traduziram.
Katherine Mansfield was a contemporary of British writers such as Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, and James Joyce. As a Modernist story, “Bliss” focuses on the protagonist’s emotions and growing self-awareness, and Mansfield extensively uses stream of consciousness to explore the inner workings of her protagonist’s mind.
She hardly dared to look into the cold mirror–but she did look, and it gave her back a woman, radiant, with smiling, trembling lips, with big, dark eyes and an air of listening, waiting for something . . . divine to happen . . . that she knew must happen . . . infallibly.
