It's common for the darker skinned Mexicans to call White Americans this. This is a very common misconeption, gringo just means U.S. citizen not matter what race or ethnicity they are. Only chicanos/pochos think gringo means white (they are unaware that to us Mexicans pochos are as gringos as apple pie).
