The national flag of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan set out in the 2004 Constitution consists of a vertical tricolor with the classical national emblem in the center. The latest version was adopted on August 19, 2013, but many similar tricolor designs had been in use throughout most of the 20th century, starting in 1928.

The Taliban intends to replace the Afghan national flag with their white banner bearing the Shahada “La ilah ila Allah, Mohammad rasoul Allah” (There is no god but God and Muhammad is God’s messenger) after retaking the country on Sunday.
The National Flag of Afghanistan is a tricolor featuring three equal vertical bands of black (hoist side), red, and green. The classical National Emblem is portrayed in white at the center of the flag on the red band and slightly overlapping the green and the black bands.
The recognized flag of Afghanistan continues to be that of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, although the Taliban flag, which was used from 1997-2001 until their collapse, has reemerged under the name of Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan as of 2021.
