Her date of birth is put between 1003 and 1010, but with no official records kept at the time, it is impossible to pin down. She is usually called Herleva, but other names are used by different chroniclers including Arlette, Arlotte and Herlotte.

Her father, Fulbert of Falaise, served as the Duke’s Chamberlain, and she was presumed to be a native of Falaise. Herleva later married Herluin de Conteville in 1031 and had two more sons who held significant positions during William’s rule, in addition to at least two daughters.

The boy's father was Gilbert, Count of Brionne, one of the most powerful landowners in Normandy. As Herleva was not married to Gilbert, the boy became known as Richard Fitz Gilbert.
