Friedrich "Fritz" Saxl was raised in a secular, culturally-Jewish home. He studied art history at the Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung (Institute for Austrian Historical Research) under the Vienna School art historians Franz Wickhoff, Julius von Schlosser and Max Dvořák, who oversaw his dissertation on Rembrandt.
6 de jan. de 2019 · In the course of provenance research at the library of the University of Vienna, a printed document with the stamp Fritz Saxl was found. The dissertation Iconography of the Seven Planets in Medieval Italian Art by Bruno Archibald Fuchs (1881–1921) from the year 1909 highlights Saxl's interest in astrology and antique and medieval astrology, which he shared with Aby Warburg.
