Nathan Birnbaum (Hebrew: נתן בירנבוים; pseudonyms: "Mathias Acher", "Dr. N. Birner", "Mathias Palme", "Anton Skart", "Theodor Schwarz", and "Pantarhei"; 16 May 1864 – 2 April 1937) was an Austrian writer and journalist, Jewish thinker and nationalist.
O criador do termo “sionismo” foi o jornalista judeu e austríaco Nathan Birnbaum (1864-1937). Birnbaum empregou a palavra pela primeira vez em um debate público realizado em Viena, em 23 de janeiro de 1892. Esse jornalista foi um dos pioneiros no combate aberto ao antissemitismo presente na Europa e em outras partes do mundo nessa época.

Nathan Birnbaum was born in Vienna and lived there from 1864 to 1908 and from 1914 to 1921. In 1882, together with two other students at the University of Vienna, he founded “Kadimah,” the first organization of Jewish nationalist students in the West.
