These portraits are a reminder of the continual ebb and flow of guests at Charleston. One individual who grew up immersed within this interconnected stream of visitors was Angelica, Vanessa and Duncan’s daughter, who was born at Charleston on Christmas day in 1918. At Charleston, Angelica was engaged in a world with no creative constraints.
Virginia tried to probe and loosen Angelica’s ideas: first through the conventional materialistic ploy of paying Angelica an annual dress allowance of £100 (Lee 634), then through giving her a copy of Mme. du Deffand’s Letters and encouraging her to speak to the Rodmell Women’s Institute on performance arts (Garnett Deceived 114).
