John Frederick William Herschel (Slough, 7 de marzo de 1792-Kent, 11 de mayo de 1871) [1] fue un matemático y astrónomo británico, hijo del astrónomo William Herschel. John Herschel popularizó el uso de la fecha juliana en astronomía e inventó la cianotipia .
John Herschel est né à Slough (en ce temps dans le Buckinghamshire et actuellement dans le Berkshire ). En 1809, il entra à l'université de St John's College (Cambridge) et en 1812 proposa son premier article de mathématiques à la Royal Society . Il n'eut jamais de poste académique mais consacra sa vie à la recherche privée.
