Butler. The Lady Elizabeth Butler, daughter to the Lord Ossory A child of James Butler, afterwards second Duke of Ormond (see his burial 22 May 1746), by his first wife. Lady Anne Hyde (dau. of Lawrence, first Earl of Rochester), who died at Dublin in January following. See her sister's burial 17 Feb. 1687-8.
Mary Butler, Duchess of Ormonde (1664 – 19 November 1733) was the second wife of James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde, Ireland. Mary, Duchess of Ormonde, painted by Michael Dahl The duke's first wife, Lady Anne Hyde, daughter of Viscount Hyde of Kenilworth , died in January 1685, leaving one daughter, Lady Mary Butler, who died in infancy.

James and Elisabeth Butler, the later Duke and Duchess of Ormond were to have a very long and successful marriage. She was sadly to predecease him and was buried on the 24th July 1684 and he followed her on the 4th Aug. 1688. Both are buried in the lady Chapel of Westminster Abbey.
Elizabeth Butler, Duchess of Ormond and 2nd Baroness Dingwall (née Preston; 1615–1684) reunited the Ormond estate as her maternal grandfather, Black Tom, 10th Earl of Ormond had it, by marrying James Butler, later Duke of Ormond, her second cousin once removed.

The marriage brought together the Ormond title and the lands and was effectively arranged by James’s grandfather who handed over £15,000 to Elizabeth’s guardian. The young married couple settled in Carrick-on-Suir, and in Kilkenny.
