This book examines two aspects of the abbreviated reign of King Ananda Mahidol (1935-1946), or King Rama VIII, of the current Chakri dynasty of Thailand. First, it discusses the royal family’s plot to thwart a romantic relationship between the young king, Ananda, and his Swiss girlfriend, Marileine Ferrari, a daughter of a famous pastor of Lausanne, Switzerland.

Fils aîné et deuxième enfant du prince Mahidol Adulyadej et de son épouse Srinagarindra, il reçoit une éducation occidentale en Suisse et retourne à Bangkok avec ses parents en 1928. Son père meurt l'année suivante et sa veuve et ses enfants s'installent à Lausanne en 1933, peu après la révolution qui a mis fin à la monarchie absolue un an plus tôt.

A child when he was elected successor to the throne in 1935, he continued to be educated in Switzerland, not visiting Thailand as king until 1938 when he was thirteen.
