Sandwich, John Montagu, Fourth Earl ofSANDWICH, JOHN MONTAGU, FOURTH EARL OF. (1718–1792). First lord of the Admiralty. Sandwich was once denounced by Whiggish historians as lazy, corrupt, and largely responsible for the unprepared state of the Royal Navy for war in 1778.
Herkunft und Familie. John Montagu stammte aus einer Familie, die zur Gentry von Northamptonshire gehörte und ihren Aufstieg den Stuarts verdankte. Anglicanesimo. John Montagu, IV conte di Sandwich ( 13 novembre 1718 – Chiswick, 30 aprile 1792 ), è stato un nobile, militare, ammiraglio e diplomatico britannico, che succedette nel titolo di Conte di Sandwich al nonno, il terzo Conte, nel 1729 .
In 1721 John Montagu, 2nd Duke of Montagu (1690-1749), accepted the position of Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England. He was the first nobleman to do so. Montagu was seen as – and was – an inspired choice and it was a testament to his prestige and reputation that a significant number of other aristocrats followed his example.

John Montagu, IV conde de Sandwich, PC, FRS sucedió a su abuelo, Edward Montagu, III conde de Sandwich, en 1729, a la edad de diez años. Durante su vida desempeñó varios cargos políticos y empleos militares, pero el hecho por el que ha pasado a la Historia es por haber sido uno de los primeros en reclamar el invento del moderno sándwich.
