By the time he returned to India, he had also been exposed to socialist ideas, which were popular amongst the intellectual class in Britain at the time.

Nehru was het eerste kind van Motilal Nehru en Swarup Rani. De Nehru's kwamen oorspronkelijk uit Kasjmir en behoorden tot de Brahmaan -kaste. Motilal was verhuisd naar Allahabad en had daar een eigen advocatenkantoor. Nehru en zijn jongere zussen kregen een Engels - Indiase opvoeding. In 1903 werd hij lid van de Theosofische Vereniging.
