Although his army career was unremarkable at the start, Sherman eventually earned the rank of general. He is remembered for his devastating march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia, during the war.

William Tecumseh Sherman, (born Feb. 8, 1820, Lancaster, Ohio, U.S.—died Feb. 14, 1891, New York, N.Y.), U.S. army general. A brother of John Sherman, he graduated from West Point, served in Florida and California, then resigned his commission in 1853 to pursue a banking career. He rejoined the Union army when the American Civil War broke out.

William Tecumseh Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, to Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer. His father died while William was still a boy and after his father’s death, he was raised by a family friend, attorney Thomas Ewing. His siblings all enjoyed professional success.
