Some Came Running is a novel by James Jones, published in 1958. It was Jones's second published novel, following his award-winning debut From Here to Eternity . It is the story of a war veteran with literary aspirations who returns in 1948 to his hometown of Parkman, Illinois, [2] after a failed writing career.
One morning, a drunken soldier and a girl get off a coach. He is a disillusioned writer going home. There he makes friends with a gambler and ends up marrying the blonde who got off the coach that morning.
That are certain expectations that immediately present themselves in connection with a film made at MGM in 1958, starring Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, and directed by Vincente Minnelli, and not the least merit of Some Came Running is that it completely defies them. It's not a musical, for one thing, though that's a superficial way to start off.
Some Came Running Men are predatory monsters in Some Came Running —a fact that the movie, to its credit, acknowledges and is at least partly about. Foremost among them is Frank Sinatra’s Dave Hirsh, a minor novelist no longer sure of his talent and now floating from bender to bender after a stint in the military.
