Torpedo Run - Apple TV. The commander of an American submarine during World War II sets out to destroy the Japanese aircraft carrier which launched the attack on Pearl Harbor. His wife and child have been captured by the Japanese and they are using them and other prisoners of war as human shields for the carrier. War & Military 1958 1 hr 38 min.
The torpedo was not armed until it had run 450 yards. Vacuum tubes were warmed up while a spinner turned a generator for the exploding circuit. When the torpedo passed under a ship’s hull, the ship’s electromagnetic field changed induction coils located in the exploder. Vacuum tubes amplified the change and released the firing pin.
Acting on a suggestion from Lieutenant Redley (Robert Hardy), a Royal Navy officer working with the Grayfish crew on its sonar gear, Doyle fires his stern torpedoes into the mine field, tricking the Japanese into thinking the Grayfish has hit a mine and sunk. The Grayfish thus escapes from the bay, and Doyle retires to his cabin to grieve.
The torpedo would be set to run at a depth just beneath the ship, relying on a magnetic exploder to activate at the appropriate time. Germany, Britain, and the U.S. independently devised ways to do this; German and American torpedoes, however, suffered problems with their depth-keeping mechanisms, coupled with faults in magnetic pistols shared by all designs.
