L' Italien Ferdinando Paër fut, avec Domenico Cimarosa et Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli, l'un des principaux compositeurs d'opéras-comiques de son temps.. Né le 1 er juin 1771, à Parme, Ferdinando Paër fait créer en 1791, dans sa ville natale, son premier ouvrage, Orphée et Eurydice, qui est en fait un drame en français et en prose avec musique (opera in prosa).
Ferdinando Paër compose alors plusieurs opéras, Griselda (1798), Camilla Ossia il Sotteraneo (1799) et Achille (1801). Marie-Louise d’Autriche est alors son élève à Vienne. En 1802, il est nommé compositeur du théâtre de la cour à Dresde et, en 1804, maître de chapelle à vie auprès de la cour de Saxe (Hofkapellmeister).
