Ia merupakan satu dari dua orang yang telah menerima penghargaan Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony, Golden Globe dan Pulitzer Prize (satunya lagi adalah Richard Rodgers ). Ia lahir dari keluarga asal kota Vienna yang beragama Yahudi.
