Robert Arthur James Gascoyne-Cecil, fifth Marquess of Salisbury, was born at the family seat, Hatfield House, on 27 August 1893, eldest son of the fourth Marquess. After spending his early childhood at Hatfield he went to school at Eton and thence in due course to Christ Church, Oxford.
In 1977 the Salisbury Group was founded, chaired by Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 6th Marquess of Salisbury and named after the 3rd Marquess. It published pamphlets advocating conservative policies. The academic quarterly The Salisbury Review was named in his honour (by Michael Oakeshott) upon its founding in 1982.
