Wellington College, founded as a living memorial to Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, was opened in 1859, and our digital archive contains material from the foundation right up to the present day. Wellington College, Crowthorne was founded under Royal Charter from Queen Victoria, as a national memorial to this Great Duke following his death in 1852. Once built Wellington College was opened in 1859 as a boy’s boarding school for the education of orphans of the British armed forces but has now expanded to become one of the nation’s co-educational boarding schools.
A new Sixth Form Centre and a new Sixth Form House will open at Wellington College in September 2024, providing world-leading co-ed facilities for 16-18 year olds. The Sixth Form Centre will be an uplifting, sociable environment more akin to the university experience with a café, seating and event spaces downstairs and a modern workspace and library upstairs, along with the careers department.
